A BONKERS heavy metal band comprised of five headbanging dogs held their farewell concert at a city centre venue, as young rockers moshed out one last time.

Slay Duggee returned to Colchester Arts Centre, in Church Street, on Sunday, where their final My First Metal Gig event took place in front of a sell-out crowd.

As usual, the quirky and endearingly chaotic band ploughed through rock covers of fan favourites, such as Baby Shark, Daddy Finger, Sleeping Bunnies and Paw Patrol.

The children huddled inside the venue were treated to pyrotechnics, confetti cannons, inflatables, circle pits, triangle pits, square pits and a stage invasion.

Slay Duggee were also joined on stage by special guests from Raiden, Colchester’s Rad Pitt, and a chorus line of young dancers for the finale.

The hallmark event was once again held in aid of Angus Grocott, a young metal fan from Colchester who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

Angus’s ongoing therapy and progress has allowed him to find his voice over the last year and he can now speak using an eye-driven talker screen.

He couldn’t attend the concert on the occasion but used his talker to record a special video introduction for the song Stick, which was shown on the big screen on stage.

Black Shuck from Slay Duggee said: “To play the historic first-ever-metal-gig in the city of Colchester was an honour and the perfect way for Slay Duggee to retire and put up our paws.

“We cannot wait to see our commemorative blue plaque unveiled on the Colchester Arts Centre toilet wall. Thank you to everyone at the venue and our brilliant crowd.”

A spokesman for Slay Duggee said hosting the My First Ever Metal Gig events had been a real thrill.

They added: “After four years of teaching kids how to headbang, mosh and pogo, the five dogs called it a day with a live spectacular at their favourite venue.

“Slay Duggee and Team Angus would like to thank everyone who attended and donated to help Angus’s therapy.”
