COLCHESTER’S newest bobby on the beat has said he will not shy away from putting himself “in harm’s way to help and protect people” in the city.

PC Aaron Smyth became a special constable with Essex Police in January 2021 before spending nearly two years volunteering and serving in Clacton.

Following a Passing Out Parade on November 4 PC Smyth, who previously worked in maintenance, has now joined the force’s policing team operating in Colchester.

He hopes his communication skills and ability to de-escalate situations will stand him in good stead when faced with difficult situations.

Gazette:

He said: “There’s a lot of weight on my shoulders to protect and help a lot of people but I have gained so much confidence and experience.

“I’ve learnt a lot over the last few years, especially that people just want to be listened to - when people call us, they’re usually scared for themselves or someone else.

“I feel proud knowing that when they see the blue lights, they’ll feel a bit more at ease knowing we’re going to help and keep them safe.”

In addition to the experience he has gained 16-miles up the road, PC Smyth takes to the streets of Colchester with 22 weeks of training under his belt.

But he also harbours something you simply cannot train or teach: a burning desire to serve his county and the people within it.

“I feel like it’s built in me to put myself in harm’s way to help and protect people and I’ve always wanted to be a police officer for that reason,” he said.

Gazette:

“Now I’m in policing, I’ve got a 35-year career ahead of me. I don’t want to rush into my dream role, which is firearms, because I want to explore other areas of the force.

“I’m looking forward to talking to the public, boosting their confidence in us and ensuring them we’re here to do the job.”

Essex Police says there will be 3,755 officers like PC Smyth operating in the county by March next year.
