A WORLD-FAMOUS drummer has hinted Blur could perform in Colchester before it tours at Wembley stadium next summer.

The iconic Britpop band has announced a rare live show in July next year, marking its first performance together since 2015.

The Gazette revealed on Thursday that Colchester Council’s culture boss Pam Cox will be making inquiries to see if the band will perform a warm-up gig in the city.

Drummer Dave Rowntree has now dropped a hint the band will consider the request after responding to a fan on Twitter.

Rowntree liked a Tweet directed at him and his fellow band members which stated: “Come on, come on, come on.

“Make our little old hometown really happy, you know you want to.”

Blur’s history is deeply rooted in Colchester, with frontman Albarn having met guitarist Graham Coxon during his days at The Stanway School.

Rowntree himself attended the Gilberd School and was introduced to Albarn in 1989 through his friendship with Coxon.

Josie Williams, whose Tweet was seen by Rowntree, said she hopes the band will listen.

“It would be amazing for Blur to come home and perform in Colchester after all these years,” said Josie, who lives in Colchester.

“They have so many fans here and it would just be the best way to celebrate us becoming a city.”

She added: “It was exciting when Dave liked my tweet because it means Blur have seen the article and know that we want them to play a homecoming show for us.”
