TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular University of Essex professor after the news of his death was announced.

Miltiadis Miltos Makris became a professor of economics at the university in October 2021.

He had initially began his research career at Essex with his PhD studies during 1995 to 1999 and returned as a lecturer last year having taught at Bristol, Exeter, Leicester, Southampton and Kent.

A university spokesman said: “It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our colleague”.

Miltos was a leading figure in economics research and made leading contributions in several fields in economics, ranging from dynamic public finance and macroeconomics to economic epidemiology.

An obituary published by the university states: “He contributed significantly to the public discussions around the Greek debt crisis in 2012 and more recently to the socioeconomic impact of Covid19.

“Miltos maintained strong links with Essex throughout his career professionally and personally.

“He served as external examiner and PhD examiner, as well as collaborating on research with colleagues here.

“His warm and generous nature made him a much-liked colleague and he was a close friend to many. He will be greatly missed.”
