THE future of a community group providing movie buffs with a social space in which to share their passion with like-minded people is “in the balance”.
Colchester Film Society, which has been in existence for several years, shows films on a monthly basis at Firstsite, in Lewis Gardens, Colchester.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, however, the number of film fans joining the group as members has drastically dwindled.
The society’s most recent membership charge for its 2022 programme was £30 for the whole year, which included 12 movies, or £20 for six months.
As a result of the decline in interest, Allen Marten from the Colchester Film Society says the regular social screenings are now under threat.
He said: “The society needs publicity if it is to survive. Since Covid-19, membership has slipped and the future of the society beyond 2023 is in the balance.
“Past attempts to attract more members have not been fruitful.
“We are holding a very brief meeting before this month’s film on November 23 at 7.45pm to inform members of the situation and seek their views on how to proceed.”
