On the 5th of November many people where excited to begin the Guy Fawkes Night celebrations with massive fireworks displays.  Kelvedon village was the same, with many waiting patiently for the glorious display at the local primary school. Every year, without fail, Kelvedon St Mary’s Primary Academy presents its immensely popular and mesmerising fireworks display that is always unforgettable to every witness – this year’s outstanding performance was no different. Tickets are constantly available in mass and sold throughout the village in the weeks leading to the event and on the door at entry.

Volunteers arrived at around four to commence the preparations like setting up the stalls and cooking the delicious sausages and burgers that were available throughout the night. Some got there even as early as 9 am to generously assist with putting up the barriers that would go between the people and the fireworks to ensure everyone’s safety.

Doors opened at 5:00 and the dazzling display began at 6:30 with the hour and a half in between being filled with a variety of stalls and raffles ranging from sweet treats and glow toys to alcohol. This year a special event was running, giving everyone there early a chance to win £25 every 15 minutes – something I’m certain tempted many people. There was a chance for everyone to win whether it be from the raffle of the potential £25, no one was left out.

The lively atmosphere was astounding, especially as the enthusiastic crowd (full of local families) gathered when it neared 6:30. Local people were laughing merrily and enjoying themselves. One spectator of the event, Jennifer Kelly, described the atmosphere as ‘thrilling’ and that it gave her ‘a genuine sense of community.’

A 6:30 the show began, and people began pushing their way to the front of the barriers to try and get the best view. The impressive display lasted around 15 breathless minutes and showcased various types of fireworks from rockets to fountains in an engaging sequence.

The memorable night came to a close in the same way it begun. Eager crowds dispersed with radiant smiles on their faces and happy, excited children running about with their friends, begging parents to buy them a glowing sword. All in all, it was a memorable night for all that attended, whether that be at the actual school or standing outside the gates.
