EMERGENCY services are on the scene of a traffic incident in Highwoods approach.

Two cars were involved in an accident shortly before 4.30pm this evening, with one of the car's having rolled onto its side.

It has caused major disruption during rush hour traffic, with Highwoods Approach now having been closed off.

On a social media post, Essex Travel News provided a graphic to show the extent of the disruption.

Police, fire, and ambulance crews are all in attendance at the scene of the incident, and have been contacted by the Gazette for comment.

One witness said the driver of one of the vehicles involved managed to get out of the car following the incident.

In an official statement from Essex Police, a spokesman confirmed that two people were involved in the accident, which happened at 4.20pm.

People have also been asked to avoid the area if at all possible, with a section of Highwoods Approach remaining closed.

The East of England Ambulance Service Trust also released a statement, which said that a male had been taken to Colchester Hospital treatment.

A spokesman said: "Two ambulances and two rapid response cars were called to reports of a road traffic accident in Highfields Approach Colchester around 4.20pm today.

"A male occupant of a vehicle was taken to Colchester General Hospital for treatment."
