A MAN has been arrested following an alleged racially motivated comment made at a Colchester United match.
Barrow reported a male was arrested during the second half of their Sky Bet League Two game against the U’s at the SO Legal Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The football club stated the individual was detained for a “racially aggravated public order defence” during the game where the Bluebirds ran out 3-1 winners.
He has since been released on bail subject to further investigation.
Colchester United said in a statement the alleged remark was “made about a U’s player by a Barrow supporter”.
The club added it was heard by head coach Matt Bloomfield, who reported it to the fourth official, and the stadium safety officer and police were notified.
A statement from Barrow read: “We must take this opportunity to emphasise that Barrow Association Football Club has a zero-tolerance approach to any racist behaviour, and any such incidents will be dealt with strongly.”
Colchester added in a statement: “Like Barrow, Colchester United would like to make it absolutely clear that we abhor discrimination in all its forms.
“Colchester United will do everything we can to assist their and any subsequent EFL or criminal investigation into this matter.”
