AN antique furniture restorer turned accomplished and “inventive” Colchester musician has released his first new single in four years.
Ady Johnson, a singer-songwriter who once painfully severed two tendons in his finger with a chisel, has just dropped The Runner.
The track, which follows 2018’s New Year’s Day, harbours “ghostly themes” and lyrically addresses mortality and how to confront the fear of death.
Ady, who has toured excessively with Novello Award-winning artist Scott Matthews, found inspiration for the song by running through Nunhead Cemetery in London.
The single saw Ady readopt a more ‘live’ and minimal production approach to the recording process, tracking both the vocals and guitar simultaneously.
He said: “The Runner was recorded live with the intention of capturing an intimacy and authenticity, not often heard in many of today's recordings.
“The main notable overdub includes an ethereal flugelhorn part played by Toby Bull.”
The Runner has been taken from troubadour Ady’s forthcoming album, which he is recording at Rebellion Studios with Nathan Wacey.
The former FuzzFace musician’s previous LPs include debut Tell The Worry Dolls and London Songs.
