A MAYOR is set to kick off the annual poppy appeal in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday.

Colchester mayor Tim Young will buy the first poppy at the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal launch at the Mercury Theatre.

Joining the mayor and the theatre’s executive director Steve Mannix are Ed Rankin, Garrison Commander Lieutenant Colonel; Andy Lamont, Garrison Sergeant Major Warrant Officer Class One; Sir Bob Russell, High Steward of Colchester, and Colchester MP Will Quince.

Steve Mannix said: “We were delighted to host the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal and mark the significant support the British Legion does on behalf of us all for veterans and serving personnel and their families.”

There is a long-established link between the performing arts and the military.

The relationship will continue on Saturday and on Thursday, November 5, serving soldier Lance Corporal Richard Jones, winner of Britain’s Got Talent in 2016 is performing at the Mercury.

Fred Woolhouse, president of the Colchester Royal British Legion, said: “We cannot thank the Mercury enough for hosting this year’s Poppy Appeal launch.

“This is avery poignant year where the Armed Forces community not only celebrated Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, but also mourned her loss as our commander-in-chief.”

Mr Young will buy the first poppy on Saturday, October 29.
