COLCHESTER will transform into a magical winter wonderland next month when dazzling lights flicker into life and illuminate the entire city centre.

The Christmas 2022 Big Festive Switch On event will take place on November 16, officially launching a joyous season of festivities with an evening of entertainment.

The sensational moment the Christmas lights start to sparkle from the Lion Walk Shopping Centre will be marked by a spellbinding fireworks display.

Prior to that, celebrations will begin with a light parade which will march from the Mercury Theatre and through the city centre, before concluding at Firstsite.

Throughout the evening, starting at 4pm, families will be able to immerse themselves in the seasonal spirit by browsing the Christmas Market, in Culver Street East.

Signalling the start of the city’s late-night shopping schedule, majority of retailers in the city centre will also happily welcome shoppers up until 9pm.

The hallmark event has been organised by Lion Walk Shopping Centre, Colchester Business Improvement District, the Mercury theatre, Firstsite, and many more.

Martin Leatherdale, centre manager at Lion Walk Shopping Centre, said: “We are so excited to get the festive season started this year.

“Lighting up Colchester will be an incredible occasion and a magical evening. Christmas in Colchester really is back in a big way in 2022.”

Demi Quinn, who is the city’s markets and street trading manager, is also looking forward to Christmas in Colchester this year.

He added “The centre of Colchester will come alive making it a great place to pick up unique gifts or special treats.

“From food and drink to inspirational arts and crafts, if you take the time to explore the market along Culver Street East you are sure to get a sense of festive cheer.”
