A FAMOUS feminist protest art collective renowned for staging unauthorised and provocative performances in unusual places will perform at an entertainment venue.

Pussy Riot, based in Moscow, will bring their unique blend of music, theatre and video to Colchester Arts Centre, in Church Street, on November 1.

The group’s lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, and opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who the group consider to be a dictator.

The collective gained global notoriety when five members staged a Punk Prayer performance inside Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior back in 2012.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich were then convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" and received prison time.

The Riot Days event at Colchester Arts Centre, created in collaboration with music producer Alexander Cheparukhin, will innovatively tell Maria's astounding story.

Since being conceived in 2016, it has received several prestigious international awards and toured extensively throughout USA and Europe.

It has previously been described by the Guardian as being “powerful and exhilarating”, as well as “poetic, razor-sharp and disarmingly witty.”
