PLANS for a towering radio mast have been thrown out after concerns were raised about its close proximity to schools.

CK Hutchinson Networks wanted to install the 5G telecommunications tower on the corner of Lexden Road and Sanders Drive.

Lexden and Braiswick councillor Lewis Barber said he is “delighted” Colchester Council rejected the plans.

He said there was “considerable disquiet” among residents about the mast spoiling the street scene of Lexden Road.

Planning bosses at Colchester Council stated the proposal was unacceptable in terms of its appearance and would dominate the surrounding area.

Fears were also raised about its location in relation to Colchester Royal Grammar School and St Mary’s.

“Not only is the site very prominent but it is close to schools, dwellings and with the Conservation Area as a backdrop,” a report reads.

“It would be likely to be detrimental to the health of the trees, the loss of which would represent a further detriment to the visual amenity of the area.”

The report concludes: “The submitted information is not considered to have conclusively proven that the proposed site is the only optimum and practical solution”.
