ESSEX MPs have had their say on the Prime Minister as she fights to save her premiership.

Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, an ally of Liz Truss, said on Thursday that removing the Prime Minister would be a “disastrously bad idea”, and threw his support behind the Conservative leader.

Truss only became Prime Minister last month, but she has faced mounting pressure from those within her own party after the Conservatives’ approval rating tumbled in the polls.

Despite the pressure from all sides, however, Truss retained the support of the Braintree MP, who told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that replacing Truss would result in further economic turmoil.

He said: “We have got to recognise that we do need to bring certainty to the markets.

“I think changing the leadership would be a disastrously bad idea politically and also economically.

“We are absolutely going to stay focused on growing the economy.”

Member of Parliament for Witham, Priti Patel, has not been as unanimous in her support.

The former Home Secretary said it was important for the Conservative government to stick with the policies which saw the Tories win a majority of 80 seats at the last election.

She said yesterday: “It is vital and it’s imperative that we continue to deliver on that [the 2019 manifesto].

“The market is going to dictate this [government policy], primarily because we want to see stability.

“Stability is absolutely crucial, for everyone to carry on living their lives, for the institutions to function, but actually for the British people to have the stability that they need in their lives as well.

“And by that, as well, I mean mortgages, interest rates and all those crucial, crucial levers.

“We’ve got a clear vision and a clear mandate for the country. It’s important that we rally behind that and just start delivering it.”
