A HEARSE driver says he saw a moped rider checking over his shoulder moments before he was killed in a collision.

The driver was taking a coffin as part of a funeral procession on a tour around Harwich before heading to the ceremony on April 15, 2020.

Moments later, in Marine Parade, Dovercourt, he was inches from a collision between Kerrin Repman and Keith McCarthy, 29, which caused the former's death.

“They were very close together. They were going very fast,” the hearse driver told Chelmsford Crown Court.

“I thought the BMW was chasing the moped. I saw him [Kerrin] swerving and looking over his shoulder.

“They came past me at speed. I didn’t see anymore, I just heard a big bang.”

The eyewitness said the BMW had come “within two inches” of his hearse and he stopped after hearing the bang because he thought he had been hit.

Following the incident, Keith McCarthy, 42, of Hordle Street, Dovercourt, was charged with Kerrin’s murder and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

He denies the charges and a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court continues.
