Due to the postal strike last week, my husband and I were delivering Talking Newspaper pouchettes to the residents with impaired sight in Balkerne Gardens on Saturday morning, 1st. October 1.

We were amazed to find ourselves, after cycling from Lexden, in a lovely market in the Mercury piazza.

Many colourful stalls and the theatre cafe doors open to the sunshine and everyone enjoying the delightful fayre on offer.

What a lovely scene and a complete surprise as we had not seen any indication that this central town space was being used in such a way.

However, we were told by a stall-holder that all their signage had been removed by the council.

We are sure that many more people would have been pleased to have visited the farmers’ market, which only occurs on the first Saturday of each month had they known it was there.

Has the council any logical explanation for their short-sighted approach?
