A DEDICATED volunteer is looking for helpers as she looks to start a youth club for young people in Highwoods.

Alison Jay, who is 57, is looking to contact the Gilberd School, where she is hoping to start the group on Friday evenings.

Having lived in Highwoods for some 20 years, Mrs Jay said people of school age in the area would benefit from having more things to do, and she feels a youth club would be the best way forward.

She said: “At the moment, it’s at a very early stage, but I work at Highwoods Community Centre and our office manager felt there was a gap for 11 to 16-year-olds in terms of keeping them off the streets.

“We are just reaching out to see what interest there is and whether there are volunteers who are looking to help us – perhaps we could find some community space and get something up and running.”

Councillor David King has put his support behind the idea.

He said: “We know that places to meet with our friends and peers really matter, perhaps to young people more than most – I ask residents to help us make this happen.”
