A GRANDMOTHER has described taking part in a historic road race as a “fantastic experience” after pounding the pavements for a cause close to her heart.

Kathy Bishop, from Stanway, tackled the legendary London Marathon on Sunday morning to raise funds for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation.

Since her three-year-old granddaughter Delilah was diagnosed with biliary atresia aged just six-weeks-old the organisation has constantly supported the family.

Amazingly, Kathy’s efforts last weekend, which saw her cross the finish line after 3hours and 53 minutes of running, have generated more than £4,000 for the charity.

She said: “What a fantastic experience it was to run the London Marathon, the support, atmosphere was phenomenal and really kept you going.

“Delilah was there supporting with all my children - they couldn't go unnoticed with the ‘Run Nanny K Run' placard.

“It was lovely to see supporters from my running club in Great Bentley too who have inspired me with my training.”

As a result of suffering from the rare and incurable disease, fighter Delilah undergoes procedures every six months and may one day need a liver transplant.

“It’s a lot for any young family to contend with but Children’s Liver Disease Foundation has always been on hand for Delilah’s parents,” added nurse Kathy.

“I have witnessed the heartache relatives go through having their loved ones in hospital, so I know just how valuable this support is.”
