WORK has started on essential improvements to a busy walking and cycling route between Wivenhoe and Colchester.

The Wivenhoe Trail will be closed daily until November 14 while the work is completed.

It will include removing encroaching vegetation, improving drainage and the laying of new granite pathways.

The route will be closed for works between 7am and 7pm.

The work aims to ensure the vital walking and cycling routes in Colchester are maintained and accessible.

The maintenance also hopes to improve connectivity for Wivenhoe residents accessing Colchester and Essex University.

The repair work has been jointly funded by Host, a student accommodation development in the Hythe, Essex County Council and supported by Sustrans.

The Wivenhoe Trail is an informal route, stretching around five miles, connecting Colchester city centre to the riverside town of Wivenhoe.
