HARDWORKING staff at a major vaccination centre in Colchester have been praised by the city’s council leader.

Tens of thousands of residents have received their Covid jabs at the JobServe Community Stadium since the facility opened in February last year.

The vaccinations take place on the concourses beneath the ground’s seating with a walk through system in place to adhere to social distancing.

Last week, Essex Partnership University Trust apologised after pensioners were made to wait in a lengthy queue outside after an error arose within the booking system.

But Colchester Council leader David King has now moved to praise those running the major operation off the A12 in United Way.

“Those working there now and their predecessors deserve full-hearted praise, including the emergency services and organisations who have made vaccination such a success here,” said the Mile End ward councillor.

“Their tolerance, hard work and kindness has benefitted so many people.

“The national effort in times of crisis needs to be administered well at a local level and my experience is that during the pandemic as a whole, there has been a fantastic response in Colchester.

“This has been a huge, good-hearted effort in which volunteers and officers are helping each other and the community.”

As of September, 52,000 autumn boosters have been administered across Suffolk and North East Essex by a variety of organisations and providers, including GP practices, pharmacies, EPUT and ESNEFT.

EPUT stated its staff are “working tirelessly” to continue delivering vaccines and cut down on waiting times.

A spokeswoman revealed last week some of the trust’s sites were issuing more than 1,000 jabs each day.

“The benefits of vaccination are clear and our health and wellbeing depends on ease of access at sites such as this,” added Mr King.

“We are hugely fortunate in the UK to have leading expertise and a national commitment to reduce illness.

“There has been huge research and support lying behind the national vaccination programmes, including the various Covid [jabs].”
