COLCHESTER’S youngest councillor has taken to the lectern at the Labour Party Conference to propose reforms to the social care system.

Molly Bloomfield, who was elected as a Labour councillor for Greenstead at the local elections in May this year, travelled to Liverpool for the party conference as the Labour party set out its plans for the country heading into the next General Election.

Miss Bloomfield, who is also a student at Essex University, called for a plan to transform care provision and empower those accessing care.

In front of the Liverpool crowd, she said: “It is the duty of a civilised society to care for its members – disabled people and carers face increased isolation.

"The current system does not reflect users' needs, wishes and diversity – we want a national social care system that is democratically accountable, publicly funded and free at the point of use that puts people before profit.”

Councillor Adam Fox, the leader of Colchester Labour, said the new policies being put forward showed Labour is ready for power.

Following the Labour party conference, the Conservative party will hold its annual conference, which will begin on Sunday in Birmingham.
