A CARE home which looks after more than 130 people has been rated as requiring improvement after it failed to act on shortcomings identified by the health watchdog during a previous inspection.

Loganberry Lodge, in Stanway, received an unannounced inspection from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in July, with the results now published online.

The inspection was carried out after the CQC reviewed its records on the service, which included concerns about high staff turnover and high numbers of accidents and incidents.

Managed by Runwood Homes, which runs 62 centres across Britain, Loganberry Lodge fell short in both the effectiveness of its care and the quality of leadership displayed from the senior management team.

The safety of the service, which looks after people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments, was regarded as good.

But with 139 people in its care across six residential units, CQC inspectors voiced concerns over the quality of its supervision for those with disabilities.

The report read: “The service is large, which does not follow usual best practice for accommodating people with a learning disability.”

The manager of the practice, Iunut Dunea, said no further admissions were being considered for people with a learning disability to ensure the level of care could be improved.

A particular issue inspectors homed in on was the quality of food offered by Loganberry Care Home, with one resident telling inspectors: “I don't like the food here, but you need to eat – it's awful, [and] the roast beef is always tough to chew.”

One relative commented: “I have complained so many times [about the food] and they say it is being looked into, but nothing happens.”

Predominantly, however, residents and relatives gave positive feedback about the home, with the manager described as “motivated and committed".

Responding to the CQC rating, a spokesman for Runwood Homes said: “The service is rated good [in terms of safety] and the team at Loganberry Lodge have addressed the issues [identified in the report].

“The manager and the team continue to work incredibly hard, and when the inspection returns, the changes put in place make us confident that we will return to a CQC good rating.”
