COUNCILLORS and dignitaries paid their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at a heartfelt ceremony yesterday.

Colchester Borough Council led the special service which took place in the town the day before the Queen’s funeral.

Her Majesty sadly died at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 8.

Much of the UK was stunned into silence by the news and people across the country, and the world, are paying their respects to the nation’s longest-reigning monarch.

The heartfelt service began at 5.45pm when a procession of Colchester dignitaries left the town hall.

Mayor of Colchester Tim Young led the procession and could be seen in full ceremonial mayoral attire.

The short trip saw the mayor lead the dignitaries to a service at St Peter’s Church on North Hill.

Among the dignitaries were mayoress Nicola Goodchild, Colchester MP Will Quince, High Sheriff of Essex Mr Nick Alston CBE DL, Garrison Commander Lt Col Ed Rankin and members Colchester Borough Council.

The service began at 6pm and was led by Rev Mark Wallace.

The reverend was joined by the Bishop of Colchester Rt Revd Roger Morris and the mayor’s Chaplain Rev Sue Howlett.

Following the service, dignitaries, alderman and councillors held a one-minute silence at 8pm on the step of the town hall.

A crowd of mourners and members of the public also attended to offer their condolences.

Mayor Tim Young said: “It was a beautiful service tonight and it was the most appropriate way to remember our Queen.

“This shouldn’t be about what you think of the monarchy; the Queen dedicated her life to public service and was a role model to generations.

“It has been a profound loss as most of us have grown up only knowing her as our monarch and we are having to get used to this transition and change.

“The Queen was a constant in our lives.

“The vast majority of people in Colchester will be feeling that scene of loss.

“It was a real privilege to lead the ceremony and a big responsibility.

“I felt that deeply but I think Colchester showed itself in the best possible light."
