A MOTHER tragically killed herself just hours after dropping her child at school, an inquest has heard.
Elena Mataj was found dead at her home in Colchester on January 27 after years of battling issues with drinking.
Police officers attending the property declared the 42-year-old’s death was not deemed suspicious and there had been no involvement from a third party.
Essex Coroner’s Court heard the mother had faced issues with alcohol and attempted to overcome them but was last seen by a doctor in July 2021 and then, prior to this, in 2018.
On the day of her death, she had taken her child to school and arrived home afterwards before she was found dead later in the day.
Her sister, Tanya, told the court she had attempted to stop her sister’s issues but “it was not possible, she told me it was her life”.
She added her sister had become upset about an incident involving a family member allegedly being assaulted in Leisure World, Colchester, prior to her death.
A toxicology report revealed 1.62mcg of amphetamine was found in her blood, leading to questions from the sister as to whether there had indeed been foul play.
However, Area Coroner Michelle Brown concluded it did not contribute to Ms Mataj’s death, and recorded the cause as one of hanging.
“I have no idea of why she did it, I don’t think anyone can and, sadly, we will never know why she did what she did, it could be any reason whatsoever,” said Ms Brown.
Recording a verdict of suicide, the coroner added: “That’s on a balance of probabilities given the note and the fact of the act itself; it’s more probable than not that she intended to take her own life.
“It was nice to meet you, but I am so sorry it was in these circumstances.”
