COLCHESTER’S mayor and mayoress were on top of the world as they visited the city’s famous water tower.

Tim Young, Nicola Goodchild and other guests climbed to the top of the Jumbo water tower as part of series of events to celebrate the Grade ll* listed Victorian building.

The visit was organised by North Essex Heritage, which plans to convert the 34-metre tower into a destination venue, restaurant, visitor experience and historical interpretation space for everyone to enjoy.

The group were briefed on the plans, include measures to protect the peregrine falcons which nest on Jumbo.

Mr Young said: "It was a wonderful experience to be given a tour of Jumbo. It had been a long-cherished ambition for many of our party to see inside the water tower.

“The views from the top are simply stunning and spectacular.

“I am in full support of the plans and vision that North Essex Heritage have for Jumbo and wish them well for the future.

“Colchester's most iconic landmark must be preserved for future generations to appreciate and enjoy."

It is hoped that an application will be made to the National Lottery Heritage Fund in early 2023.
