EMERGENCY services airlifted a motorcyclist to hospital after a serious collision in Drury Road, Colchester.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening, when a motorcyclist was thrown from his vehicle after colliding with a Mercedes at about 5.15pm.

Members of the public rushed to the scene to aid the motorcyclist, before others stood and redirected traffic whilst the emergency services arrived at the scene.

The road was closed for two hours, during which time two ambulances and two ambulance officer vehicles arrived to try and stabilise the condition of the motorcyclist.

Essex and Herts Air Ambulance landed in Layer Road before taking the motorcyclist to a major trauma ward at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, at about 6.30pm.

The man, who has not been named, is said to have sustained serious injuries to one of his legs.

Speaking to the Gazette, one member of the public said they heard a huge crashing noise before running outside their house to see what had happened.

It is believed that after the motorcyclist collided with the silver Mercedes, he skidded 40 yards along the road with his leg caught underneath the motorbike.

Witnesses say the motorcyclist then came to a halt after hitting a parked Ford Fiesta, and was said to be trapped underneath the car whilst emergency services worked to free him.

One driver said: “My car was right behind the ambulance.

“I was driving towards the location when I heard this almighty crash.

“I didn’t see the crash – I only saw the motorcyclist under the parked red car and it looked like his leg was really badly injured.”

A witness told the Gazette medics were on the scene for 90 minutes the motorcyclist was taken to the nearby air ambulance.

Drury Road then reopened at 7.25pm.
