VISITORS flocked to Colchester city centre as a popular sci-fi and superhero event returned for its tenth anniversary.

Invasion Colchester returned to Colchester on Saturday.

Famous characters roamed the city, with live performances from talented musicians, a number of competitions and special guests.

The event raises funds for St Helena Hospice, Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity and Mind (Mid and North East Essex).

Organiser Kerrie Williams said: "It was a really good day, the event filled the town. From Ace Comics you couldn't even see the path there were so many people.

"It was amazing to see people come into Colchester and walk around the town, enjoy the town."

Early estimates suggest the event has raised more than £6,000 for its three charities, though this total could eclipse £10,000 over the coming days.

"It is a phenomenal amount," said Kerrie.

The event attracted 150 official 'costumers' and 50 volunteers.

Previous events have raised more than £60,000 for St Helena Hospice and Colchester and Ipswich Hospital’s Charity as well as creating a huge buzz in Colchester.
