POLITICIAN James Cleverly has said Liz Truss winning the Tory leadership election is “incredibly good news”.

The Braintree MP and Education Secretary was present at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster when the result was announced.

In total 81,326 Conservative Party members backed Mrs Truss, while Rishi Sunak secured 60,399 votes.

Mrs Truss is now set to replace the outgoing Boris Johnson as the occupant of Number 10, becoming the third woman in history to be unveiled as Prime Minister.

Speaking after the victory, Mr Cleverly said: “I think this is incredibly good news - really good news.”

Mr Cleverly refused, however, to speculate about how Mrs Truss would tackle the cost-of-living crisis or if she would be announcing a support package.

“There’s no point me guessing or speculating what the future fiscal announcement will be.

“She’s literally only just been announced as the leader of the party," he added.

“She absolutely understands the pressure that a lot of people are feeling, and she will of course respond to that.

“She also recognises what the international drivers are and she’s going to address those things.”
