A FIRE is ongoing in Witham as firefighters work to tackle the flames.

Smoke is pouring out of the Eastways Industrial Estate in Witham due to an ongoing fire.

According to one eyewitness, the fire is near to the Revlac Auto Engineers building on the estate, and a crew have been on the scene since about midday.

The fire is rumoured to have been ongoing throughout most of the morning, and firefighters remain on the scene.

Essex Travel bosses have confirmed that Eastways is closed at Mott Lane due to the ongoing building fire.

Essex Fire confirmed the news, and released a statement on the incident.

A spokesman said: "Crews are on scene at a fire in an industrial building in Croft Way, Witham. We were called at 11.01am. It’s in a two-storey building with the fire on the first floor.

"The fire has affected ten per cent of the 50 metre by 25 metre building and it’s 60 per cent smoke logged.

"Everybody is out of the building and neighbouring businesses and buildings have also been evacuated as a precaution.

Station Manager Dan Wastell said: “There is a lot of smoke, so we’d ask people nearby to keep their windows and doors closed and avoid the area. We’ve divided the fire into three sectors.”
