“I don’t want to overstate it but sadly there are incidents such as this from time to time, but I will stress Colchester is a relatively safe place,” said the former MP.

“I think in the vicinity of Castle Park there have been crimes but they don’t happen too often. We do have to acknowledge, though, there have been some serious crimes there over the years.

“I have lived here for more than 50 years and most days of the week nothing untoward happens.

“Sadly, when something untoward does happen, it reminds us there are some worrying people out there.”

Castle ward councillor Richard Kirkby-Taylor stressed the incident highlights the unsung importance of Colchester’s green spaces.

“It brings home the necessity of these green spaces. People can often disregard them but they form a vital part of our emergency infrastructure,” said the councillor.

“The air ambulance does amazing work. Their attendance shows this was a serious incident.

“But, if we don’t have the green spaces then they can’t land.”
