BRAINTREE’S MP has hinted he would accept a move to the Foreign Office should new Prime Minister Liz Truss offer him the role.

James Cleverly MP has been tipped to take on Ms Truss' former role as Foreign Secretary.

The 53-year-old, who was an ardent supporter of Ms Truss during her leadership bid, was only made Education Secretary in July.

However, Mr Cleverly could become the next Foreign Secretary with rumours strongly linking him to the promotion.

Mr Cleverly should be familiar with the role having previously served in the Foreign Office as Minister of State for the Middle East North Africa and North America, and Minister of State for Europe and North America from 2020 before being named Education Secretary.

Now Mr Cleverly has hinted he would be happy to accept the role if it was offered to him in the Cabinet shakeup.

Speaking to the PA news agency at the site of the announcement in central London, he said: “Let’s get one thing (done) at a time.”

Asked if he would accept the job if offered it, he asked: “Who wouldn’t accept it?”
