PEDESTRIAN access to a busy city centre car park is set to be temporarily reduced for more than six weeks while workers make improvements.
St John’s car park’s westside stairwell, in Colchester, will be out of action between September 12 and October 28, due to essential works being carried out.
During this time drivers, residents and shoppers will have to enter and exit the car park using the stairs and lifts in the adjacent shopping centre from 9am until 6pm.
Alternatively, the building’s east side stairwell will continue to remain accessible to the public between 5am until 7pm.
The car park itself, which charges £4 for all day paring in the week, will also operate as usual while on-site signage will advise motorists of the temporary access changes.
Martin Goss, Colchester councillor for neighbourhood services and waste, said: “These works will improve customers’ experience of St John’s Car Park.
“We’ve worked with our contractors and the North Essex Parking Partnership to minimise the disruption to the car park users.
“The only pedestrian access will be via the east stairwell, where customers can enjoy the vibrant tropical-themed murals which were painted by a local artist last year.”
