A CHARITY dedicated to supporting people diagnosed with dementia treated its community to a sweet treat after being handed hundreds of pounds in funding.

The Wivenhoe Dementia Support Group has just received £500 from The 500 Club, a non-profit organisation which strives to help community causes.

The windfall was handed over to the group, which runs regular get togethers at the Friendly Club and Café at St Mary’s Church, in celebration of its first anniversary.

To commemorate the milestone, representatives from the organisation decided to use some of the donation to book an ice cream van at their latest meet-up.

A spokesman for the Dementia Support Group said: “It has made a big difference to our Friendly Club and Café and those people diagnosed with dementia and their carers.

“Not everyone who comes to our regular Thursday afternoon sessions has dementia, many just come because they want company and come to enjoy a good chat.

“It was a long time ago for some of the people there since they have queued for an ice-cream at a van and it added to the excitement of it.”
