MANY of us love going to the pub.

Whether it is alone, with friends, family, work colleagues and or others, it’s a staple choice when heading out, and we all have our favourites.

There are the classic options of pubs that have been in Colchester for decades, to newer ones that have been refurbished or opened in recent times.

Some simply love their local, whereas others don’t mind travelling to that one pub that simply does it for them.

We asked Gazette Facebook users what the best pub in Colchester is. Here is what some had to say.

Audrey Carrroll said: “The Grapes. I worked there in the 70s and had some good times. That was when a pint of lager was about 50 pence.”

Other readers agreed, with The Grapes being a popular choice amongst residents.

Martin Harper said: “The Grapes Pub without a doubt.”

John Clifford added: “The Grapes. Fantastic staff. Fantastic Regulars. Great family day out at weekends.”

Jimmy Carry said: “Definitely the Grapes. Back in my days in the 70s a close second was the Mermaid.”

Another popular choice was the Purple Dog, with Sasha Antonia picking this pub in Eld Lane.

It received further thumbs up from Karen Phipps, and Anthony Tomlin who praised the food.

Another pub that received praise was the Hare and Hounds.

Caroline Bowyer said it has “great food, great atmosphere and great beer”.

Dixie Darling agreed with this choice. She said: “Couldn’t ask for a better pub. The people are so welcoming and good food, wonderful village. I have never had a bad day visiting, they’re so accommodating.”

Live and Let Live in Millers Lane was another stand out choice.

Rachel Hannah said it has “lovely beach huts and a good menu”.

Cheryl Leppich added: “Live and Let Live. Always good and a nice garden.”

Andrew Jackson also chose this pub, saying: “It is the best pub ever and the best staff.”

The pub also got the thumbs up from Elisa Bell, Simon Hendry and Alan Wilkinson.

Other popular choices included The Spinnaker at the Hythe, the Three Wise Monkeys, the Odd One Out in Mersea Road, the Bricklayers in Mile End Road and the Victoria Inn in North Station Road.
