A SURVEY aimed at asking citizens what they believe the city needs has been released, following the new masterplan for Colchester’s city centre.

The survey is aimed for all those who live, work, do business and visit the city centre to get involved and lend their voice to the project, whilst setting out a vision for how the city centre should develop and progress.

As part of the early planning stage, authorities are considering new ways of evolving how we work and shop in the city centre, as well as habits and leisure activities.

These areas for improvement will further explore travel habits, public transport and access to the centre from wider Colchester.

Apart from the usual survey questions which cover issues such as age, religion, gender and so on, the survey touches on many relevant topics and considerations for the High Street.

Firstly, the survey asks what usually brings citizens to the city centre, from work obligations, to being a business owner, whether you commute through the city, or if you just live there.

The survey will also ask residents how they travel outside of the city centre, whether they cycle, drive, or use public transport.

Users are then asked what they access the High Street for, be it essential or non-essential shopping, eating and drinking out, events, medical reasons, or services, such as haircuts.

The survey then asks users to rate various parts about the city centre from a 1 – 5 star rating system.

The topics covered include traffic, a variety of things to do within the centre, evening and night time entertainment, amount of shops, as well as more.

Users are then given the opportunity to write their thoughts on the matters down. Other relevant topics are then covered, further adding to the scope.

Users are asked about their beliefs for the city centres economy, whether they feel more housing is needed and if they believe Colchester should be greener, with better cycle access.

The survey follows the recent appointment of We Made That, a multi-disciplinary team that provides urban research, strategies and master plans to improve public spaces.

We Made That will manage the project and lead the consultant team in order to deliver the masterplan.

The plan aims to create a future vision for the city and identify areas that need growth, whilst assessing the potentials for future transport opportunities.

The company plans to actively engage with all who work, live, do business and visit the city centre, in order to create an overarching plan.

Completing the survey is one way that all residents can have their say on the matter, residents have till October 2, 2022 to complete the survey. All information provided is confidential.
