A SCHEME which has provided donations which “will mean the world” to vulnerable residents, is expanding.

Colchester Council are adding more dates to their community cycle initiative this weekend.

Residents have already donated many of their unwanted bicycles to the scheme which sees the bikes get refurbished and gifted to local community groups or individuals most in need.

Cyclists can get a free bike check with Dr Bike and free cycling safety equipment at any drop-off point, whether they have a bike donation or not.

The project relaunched at Wilkins and Sons Tiptree Jam factory and has already collected 90 bicycles so far, which beats last years total of 55 donations.

Julie Young, Colchester Council Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: “I would like to thank the local heroes who donated their unused bikes.

"As the cost of living becomes harder, some of our most vulnerable residents would not be able to afford a bicycle. Your kind donation will mean the world to them.”

More bike donations can be made on Saturday, August 20 at Boxted Community Hub from 10am to 1pm.

The final points will be at Kingsland Church holiday club on Friday, August 26 from 11am until 3.30pm or the Eco Festival at Lower Castle Park, Colchester on Saturday, September 3 from 11am until 5.30pm.
