EIGHT fire crews tackled another field fire as the effects of the heatwave continued to be felt.

Essex Fire and Rescue said they tackled 20 field fires yesterday, August 11, including a large fire near Langford Road in Wickham Bishops.

Crews from Maldon, Tiptree, Tollesbury, Wethersfield, Brightlingsea, Witham and an off-road vehicle from Chelmsford attended.

Crews surrounded the fire and extinguished it by 7.22pm.

The fire service has also issued advice on how people can help to prevent fires.

A spokesman said: “In hot and dry weather, people can prevent fires if they don’t have bonfires and or campfires, don’t have barbecues, make sure cigarettes are put out properly and don’t leave glass bottles in the sun.”

The service also continues to look for on-call firefighters to help them.

A spokesman said: “Many of the firefighters who attended this incident are on-call firefighters, who live or work within five minutes of the station and are paid to protect their community.

“If you live or work within five minutes of an on-call fire station, you could be an on-call firefighter too.
