FIREFIGHTERS battled to put extinguish a blaze after grass and trees next to a busy road caught alight.

It happened after grass by the footpath in Cowdray Avenue, Colchester, became on fire yesterday afternoon.

It comes as the UK faces its second heatwave in a month, with soaring temperatures putting pressure on the emergency services.

A fire crew from Colchester attended the scene shortly before 1.40pm and reported an area of grass and trees were ablaze.

A brigade spokeswoman added: “Firefighters extinguished the fire by 2.27pm”.
