COLCHESTER United make the trip to Edgeley Park this weekend for the first time in more than 12 years.

The last time the U's played at Stockport County was in February 2010, when first-half goals from David Prutton and Anthony Wordsworth were cancelled out by future Colchester striker Jabo Ibehre, in a 2-2 draw in League One.

The previous season, the U's had gone one better and won 2-1 at the venue - giving Paul Lambert victory in his first game in charge.

Gazette:

Lambert had been appointed as Geraint Williams' successor at Colchester in October 2008, coming in after Kit Symons had presided over a four-game caretaker spell in charge.

The Scot's starting line-up for his first U's game in charge at Stockport was: Gerken, White, Reid, Baldwin, Jackson, Perkins, Hammond, Wordsworth, Yeates, Platt, Gillespie.

Colchester's subs were Kem Izzet, Sunday Wasiu, Matt Heath, Scott Vernon and Mark Cousins.

They came up against a Stockport side that featured a young Fraser Forster between the sticks.

Lambert got off to a dream start, in his first Colchester game in charge.

Tenacious midfielder David Perkins gave the U's a 20th-minute lead, to stun the majority of the 6,025 crowd.

But Stockport were determined to play the role of party poopers on Lambert's big day and Matty McNeil equalised just before the break, to ensure the sides went in level at the break.

Gazette:

It looked as though Lambert's first game in charge of Colchester would end all square.

But with three minutes remaining, Clive Platt struck a dramatic late winner for the U's to give their new boss a winning start.

Lambert went on to lead Colchester to a 12th-place finish in League One, in the 2008-09 season.

He famously led the U's to an unforgettable 7-1 win at Norwich City on the opening day of the following campaign, before quitting to take over at Carrow Road a few days later.
