A FED-UP campaigner has called on his counterparts to run for council in the wake of a controversial planning decision.

Dave Smith, 63, issued his rallying call to the Save the Wick group in the hopes someone will run for the Old Heath and the Hythe seat in Colchester Council next May.

It follows the authority’s planning committee voting in favour of Colchester’s Local Plan allocating 1,000 homes to be built on the Middlewick Ranges.

Mr Smith, of Speedwell Road, Colchester, says he feels someone from the campaign group should step forward to represent residents, but ruled himself out of the running due to work commitments.

“I saw it as a betrayal to vote for the Local Plan as it was,” he said.

He continued: “If we get a candidate out there at an early stage there will be considerable support for them”.

Old Heath and Hythe councillor Adam Fox, who voted for the inclusion of the Wick in the Local Plan, previously told a planning committee "It’s not in the hands of councillors, unfortunately”.

He added: “The onus is on us as a council to put together a local development plan that meets the targets handed down to us”.
