POLICE are looking to take action against football supporters who caused crowd trouble at a Colchester United match.

Suffolk Police says following the U’s’ match against Ipswich Town on Tuesday, officers were required to deal with “anti-social and disorderly behaviour” by some groups of fans.

Children were reportedly in tears as so-called supporters ripped chairs from Portman Road stadium, in Ipswich, and launched them into their own stand.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said: “Police are looking to see if there are opportunities take action against the small minority of fans who displayed unacceptable behaviour.

“We will work with the two football clubs and will investigate any offences that are reported.”

Mr Cowling stated he can “assure” fans both football clubs will be working together to ensure those responsible are punished.

“"I wish to apologise to everyone that was subjected to this appalling behaviour, and also to our hosts Ipswich Town who were gracious in defeat but rightfully upset with the behaviour of fans in our allocated area,” he added.
