SECURITY measures at a community centre in Colchester are being ramped up to deal with youngsters risking their lives on top of its roof.

Bosses at the Colchester Adult Community Centre, also known as the Wilson Marriage Suite, say they are liaising with Essex Police to tackle crime at the site in Barrack Street.

It follows a series of incidents where youngsters have put themselves in danger on the large building’s rooftop, a trend seen across the city.

An Essex County Council spokesman told the Gazette the authority is now seeking to increase security measures at the site, which offers online learning courses and workshops to adults.

Essex Police says it is working with partner agencies including Colchester Council following “multiple reports” of anti-social behaviour whereby people are seen running on rooftops.

“As well as being extremely dangerous, these incidents have also resulted in criminal damage,” added a police spokeswoman.

Inspector Stuart Austin has now urged those with any information or who have witnessed the concerning behaviour to contact the force.

He said: “These reports remain under investigation and we would like to remind the public of the dangers in doing this.

“We are working with our local partners to prevent this form of anti-social behaviour.

“We currently believe that those committing these offences are minors, and we would urge parents or guardians who may be aware of children doing this, to inform them of the dangers.”

The issue has also seriously impacted Stepping Stones Play and Learn Group which is partly-based in the centre.

Nursery co-ordinator Sue Townsend revealed the group is about £5,000 out of pocket due to criminal damage.

“We are still getting targeted but we’re not as exciting to the group at the moment, they’re looking for height which very much seems to be the trend,” said Mrs Townsend.

“Most recently they’ve been climbing on our roof and they tried to rip away the mesh.

“They gave it a really good yank, ripped half of it off and left it flapping there.”
