THERE'S more than local pride at stake when Colchester United make the short trip to play Ipswich Town tonight.

A place in the Carabao Cup second round is also up for grabs for the winner of the tie, at Portman Road.

That is unlikely to stop Wayne Brown and his Town counterpart Kieran McKenna from making changes to their starting line-ups, though.

The U's boss made only one alteration to his starting line-up for the 1-1 draw with Carlisle United last weekend - bringing in summer signing Alex Newby for John Akinde.

And with an important League Two game coming up at Stockport County on Saturday, Brown could well opt to freshen things up.

Colchester's substitutes have been making an impact off the bench.

Gazette:

Frank Nouble has come on in the second half of each of the U's first two matches and has made a positive impact, so will be hoping for a start.

Likewise, youngsters Marley Marshall Miranda and Ossama Ashley each made a good impression in the final half hour of the Carlisle game.

Junior Tchamadeu finished the game at left-back and Brown could bring Cameron Coxe into the team at right-back, after Ryan Clampin was withdrawn due to fatigue against Carlisle.

In the U's last away game, Colchester paired Freddie Sears and John Akinde, who was on the bench against Carlisle.

Brown also started the duo in attack on several occasions last season, so there is a chance that there could be a formation change with two up front.

Gazette:

Whatever happens, there is likely to be several former Ipswich players returning to their former club.

Nouble, Luke Chambers, Cole Skuse, Alan Judge, Freddie Sears and Tom Eastman are all set to be back at Portman Road, with Tommy Smith and Emyr Huws missing the game through injury.

There are also Colchester connections in the Ipswich squad too, with Kane Vincent-Young and Freddie Ladapo set to feature against their old club.

Whoever starts for Colchester tomorrow, boss Brown wants to progress to the next round - and believes the U's fans can play their part.

Gazette:

“The aim is to try and get through to the next round," said Brown.

“They’re all difficult challenges, as was Carlisle, as was last week (at Northampton).

“Ipswich is going to be no different.

“There’s obviously a little bit of a stigma behind it as well with it being a local derby and they’re just down the road.

“I’m sure that we’ll take many fans and they’ll be in good voice. which will be massive for us to try and achieve what we want to achieve in the game.

“We’re ultimately going there to do all we can to get a result.

“That’s the business that we’re in."
