FIREFIGHTERS rushed to tackle a blaze at an historic former army gym after its rooftop caught alight.

Plumes of smoke could be seen in the Abbey Field area of Colchester late this morning as the flames took hold on the C3 Church’s roof shortly after 11.30am.

The Gazette understands the fire started after solar panels on top of the ex-military building overheated due to the hot weather.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the panels were involved in the blaze off Circular Road South and Ypres Road, which was extinguished by 1.10pm.

Colchester High Steward Sir Bob Russell witnessed the incident unfolding while he was in the area and said he could smell burning as three fire appliances dealt with the situation.

“I understand no water got into the building because the new roof they put in after a previous fire managed to prevent any water penetration,” said the former MP.

“Congratulations to the fire service for their prompt attention in stopping what could have been a very serious second fire to this building.

“It became quickly under control and there is only superficial damage, of course if there is further damage then that would be awful.

“This is a Victorian army building and therefore it is very important in the history of Colchester as a garrison town; the fact it is a listed building demonstrates how significant it is.”

A fire service spokeswoman stated crews were called to Abbey Field at 11.32am following reports of a fire.

“On arrival, crews confirmed there was a fire in a church roof and solar panels were involved,” she added.

“Firefighters worked hard to extinguish the fire by 1.10pm.”

The Victorian listed building which dates back to 1860 is now owned by Colchester Council and is home to the C3 Church.

It was formerly known as the garrison gym but was passed to the council from the Ministry of Defence 12 years ago when operations moved to the newly-established Merville Barracks.

The centre held its first service in Good Friday of last year with Nigel and Mandy Drew as pastors.
