A STALWART will introduce residents to the rich Roman history of their doorstep when he embarks on an educational and informative stroll around the city.

Colchester High Steward Sir Bob Russell will lead a heritage walk on Sunday, beginning at Colchester Arts Centre, in Church Street, from 10am.

The two-hour All-Roman Tour X will take in Balkerne Gate, which remains one of the country’s oldest Roman Christian churches and is the site of the Roman Circus.

The event will raise money for a statue of sisters Jane and Ann Taylor, prolific writers who penned Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in Colchester in 1806.

A spokesman for the walk said: “Enjoy an entertaining and fact-filled walk in the company of former Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell.”

Places on the tour are limited to a maximum of 20 people so those wishing to attend are encouraged to book their place sooner rather than later.

To purchase a ticket, which cost £5, visit colchesterartscentre.com or calling the venue’s box office on 01206 500900.

Alternatively, guests can arrive on the day of the walk and pay a donation of £5 to join, permitting there are spaces remaining.
