Essex Air Ambulance also confirmed a crew was dispatched to the scene.

The road remained closed after the collision and was closed into the evening.

Following the incident, police confirmed that no arrests have currently taken place as of today.

Colchester borough councillor for Wivenhoe and resident of the town Mark Cory expressed his sympathies.

He added: “The whole thing is really sad.

“Incidents like this are not common in Wivenhoe and I was shocked to hear it.

“As I say I understand it was a tragic and freak accident, and has certainly upset many people within the community.

“I think many of us will know the person and it is sad for their family and the people involved. I, of course, send them my thoughts and prayers.

“It will then be important to come together as a community and when we find out more and when the time is right, then we can pay our respects.”
