ECO-ACTIVISTS were on song and in colour as they marched through the streets of Colchester.

Extinction Rebellion came to Colchester on Saturday as campaigners paraded through the town centre streets as part of their ongoing fight against climate change.

Protestors began at the Castle Park entrance on the High Street, before going round and through the town centre making their voices heard.

Led by the samba band, there was a large variety of displays on show during the march, from children with homemade dragonflies and bees to other colourful animals like fish and birds, which were a part of the life section.

In addition to this, there was another section more focused on emphasising the impact of climate change, with tombstones and skeletons.

James Harvey, from Extinction Rebellion East of England, was one of the attendees at the event.

He explained what it was about, and why the protests have been ongoing over the last fortnight.

James said: “In XR we are having a summer uprising across all regions of UK.

“There is lots of stuff all over the place, and in the east of England we wanted to celebrate life, and we thought of doing that through a carnival.

“The idea is to raise awareness of the climate and ecological emergency, by letting people know who we are and trying to get people involved.

“I am from East Anglia myself and we have already seen how climate has been affecting here as much as anywhere else, like with the wildfires through heat.

“It is nice to celebrate life but draw attention to the threat we face.”

James also added that the reception in Colchester was positive, and that the event was a success.

“There are always going to be people on climate change denial and others that might get annoyed with the slight disruption we cause, but on the whole, it was a really positive reception.

“People were engaging and wanting to learn more, and we managed to show everyone what we wer about, and get our demands across.

“All in all I’d say the day was a big success.”
