A FOLK singer from Essex who is considered by many as a musical cult hero is set to perform at one of the “country’s finest independent venues.”

Beans On Toast, from Braintree, will take to the stage of Colchester Arts Centre, in Church Street, on February 21, playing a set full of story-telling songs.

His visit to the city follows a successful tour of the country earlier this year, which acted as the catalyst for his rapid return to the live music scene.

The “proper” folk artist, also known as Jay McAllister, is lauded for his more traditional approach to being a singer-songwriter and his tackling of the big issues.

In addition to bringing his “mahoosive ramble” to Colchester Arts Centre, the one-man band will also play at 29 other independent venues.

Speaking about the upcoming tour, Beans On Toast said “Folk music is an age-old art form, and it’s more relevant than ever in these wild and crazy modern times.

“You can expect an inspiring and entertaining gig, a relaxed and fun affair that leaves you feeling like you've met up with an old friend, and you're all the better for it.”

Tickets for the gig, the doors for which open at 7.30pm, cost £16.50 and can be purchased by visiting colchesterartscentre.com.
