A SUPERMARKET giant has opened a new store within a city centre and donated thousands of pounds to a fundraising campaign to commemorate the launch.

Tesco welcomed its very first customers to its new Express shop in High Street, Colchester, yesterday following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

As well as creating more jobs, it is hoped the store will also have a wider-reaching impact on those living in the area through its range of community programmes.

The fresh Tesco shop will also once again give city centre-based shoppers more option following Marks and Spencer’s decision to relocate to Stanway.

The unveiling was attended by Sir Bob Russell, High Steward and former mayor of Colchester, who received £2,000 from the retailer for his Twinkle Star statue project.

Keith Jackson, Tesco communications manager, said: “We are extremely excited to be opening our new Colchester store.

“And what better way to celebrate this launch than by inviting Sir Bob Russell down to the opening, who is passionate about all things Colchester.

“It’s exciting to know the store is built just around the corner from where one of the world’s most famous nursery songs was written.

“We hope the donation made by Tesco will help towards the final building costs of this statue and help put Colchester on the map, celebrating all the city has to offer.”

Sir Bob’s Twinkle Star initiative is designed to celebrate Colchester literature and will see a bronze life-sized statue built.

The figurine will commemorate writers Jane and Ann Taylor, who penned arguably the world’s most famous nursery rhyme Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

Once built, it will be placed directly outside the new Tesco Express, which is reportedly in close proximity to the origins of the song.

Gazette:

“I am grateful to Tesco for their significant vote of confidence in Colchester, and for making this kind donation,” added Sir Bob.

“Every little helps, and I am now just £20,000 short of what is needed for the statue to be cast in bronze.

“I believe the literary work of Jane and Ann should be commemorated with a statue which will become a significant tourist attraction.”
