SAILORS had to put on their running shoes as well as their waterproofs as they took part in the popular round-the-island sailing race.
The annual event is part of the sailing regatta which is organised by West Mersea Yacht Club.
The race typically welcomes entries from windsurfers as well as people rowing boats, dinghies and catamarans who all take on the challenge of sailing around the island including picking up their boats and carrying them over the Strood.
Less boats than usual were involved in the race this year due to a change in date attributed to tide times, with start times running from midday to 3.30pm at five minute intervals.
Everyone from serious contenders to those just looking for a bit of fun on the water got involved, with competitors doing battle around the island.
Boats were heaved out of the water when they got to the Strood causeway and carried across before being put back into the water again.
The unique event, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020, has enjoyed huge popularity over the years and is acknowledged as a key community staple in the Mersea calendar.
The winner of the coveted Coconut Trophy was Bryan and William Sergeant.
